The Architecture of Straus

Architect Ivan Štraus was born in 1928th. The study of architecture he began in Zagreb in 1947th and he graduated in 1958th at the Technical University of Sarajevo.
First designs he began as a student of architecture in 1952nd with his first and successful participation in the architectural competition. Since then, he won about thirty leading prizes at the architectural public competitions in Yugoslavia, and two international architectural competition first prizes – 1964th for the General Post Office, Ministry of PTT and Imperial Board of Telecommunications in Addis Ababa / Ethiopia (with Z. Kovacevic) and 1973 for the Opera House in Sofia / Bulgaria (with H. Muhasilović).
His realization are numerous, some of which are construct after awarded competition ideas. Particularly significant are General Post Office, Ministry of PTT and Imperial Board of Telecommunications in Addis Ababa; in Sarajevo UNIS Business Center, Headquarter of Electric Company B&H, Holiday Inn hotel, Shopping Center with three residential towers; in Belgrade Aviation Museum, in Niksic hotel Onogošt; in Slano hotel Osmine; in Derventa Army Hall; the Olympic Press Centre in Bjelasnica; the Catholic Church in Zovik near Brčko.
1965th he was awarded with the City of Sarajevo April 6th Award; 1978th with the Award of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina for his architectural oeuvre; 1990th with BORBA Federal Award for the best architectural achievement in Yugoslavia in the previous year - the Museum of Aviation in Belgrade.
1984th he was elected for corresponding member and in 1995th for regular member of the Academy of Sciences and Arts of Bosnia and Herzegovina. During the 1973rd and 1974th he presented his work on solo exhibitions in Sarajevo, Belgrade and Zagreb, and in 1986th and 1987th on the retrospection of his work through 25 years on exhibitions held in Sarajevo, Skopje, Belgrade, Ljubljana and Novi Sad. He was a frequent participant in the collective architectural exhibitions, in New York at the exhibition “Yugoslav architecture 1977-1984”, in Belgrade at the exhibition “11 prominent architects of Yugoslavia”, and in Sarajevo, Zagreb, Budapest and Maribor at the exhibition “Architects-Academics of Bosnia and Herzegovina”. 1977th he published a chronicle “New Architecture of Bosnia and Herzegovina”; 1987th he was one of the authors of the book “The Architecture of the twentieth century” in the edition of “Art in Yugoslavia”. That same was published the book “15 years bosnian and herzegovinian architecture”.1991 he published a chronicle “The Architecture of Yugoslavia 1945-1990”, 1994th in Paris he published his diary „Sarajevo – l’rchitecte et les barbares“in French, 1995th the same diary “The Architect and the Barbarians” in Bosnian, and in 1998th he published a chronicle, “Architecture of Bosnia and Herzegovina 1945-1995”. 2002nd ANUBiH published a monograph ‘’Ivan Štraus, architect / ‘52-’02“. 2010th in Sarajevo he published the book “99 Architects of Sarajevo Circle 1930-1990”.
